Question

A particle executes simple harmonic motion such that in two of its positions, velocities are uu and vv, and the two corresponding accelerations are f1f_1 and f2f_2. For what value(s) of kk is the distance between the two positions k(v2−u2)k(v^2-u^2)? Show also that the amplitude is

1f22−f12 [(u2−v2)(u2f22−v2f12)]1/2.\frac{1}{f_2^2-f_1^2}\,\bigl[(u^2-v^2)(u^2 f_2^2-v^2 f_1^2)\bigr]^{1/2}.

Technique

Use the SHM relations v2=ω2(A2−x2)v^2=\omega^2(A^2-x^2) and a=−ω2xa=-\omega^2 x at each state; eliminate ω2\omega^2 between them.

Solution

SHM relations. With displacement xx from the centre, angular frequency ω\omega, and amplitude AA:

velocity2=ω2(A2−x2),acceleration=−ω2x.\text{velocity}^2=\omega^2(A^2-x^2),\qquad \text{acceleration}=-\omega^2 x.

So x=−a/ω2x=-a/\omega^2.

Step 1 — Find ω2\omega^2.

State 1 (velocity uu, acceleration f1f_1): u2=ω2A2−f12/ω2u^2=\omega^2 A^2-f_1^2/\omega^2. State 2 (velocity vv, acceleration f2f_2): v2=ω2A2−f22/ω2v^2=\omega^2 A^2-f_2^2/\omega^2.

Subtracting:

u2−v2=f22−f12ω2  ⇒  ω2=f22−f12u2−v2.u^2-v^2=\frac{f_2^2-f_1^2}{\omega^2}\;\Rightarrow\;\omega^2=\frac{f_2^2-f_1^2}{u^2-v^2}.

Step 2 — Distance between the two positions.

∣x2−x1∣=∣f2−f1ω2∣=∣f2−f1∣(u2−v2)f22−f12=u2−v2f2+f1.|x_2-x_1|=\left|\frac{f_2-f_1}{\omega^2}\right|=\frac{|f_2-f_1|(u^2-v^2)}{f_2^2-f_1^2}=\frac{u^2-v^2}{f_2+f_1}.

Equating to k(v2−u2)=−k(u2−v2)k(v^2-u^2)=-k(u^2-v^2):

k=−1f1+f2.k=-\frac{1}{f_1+f_2}.

Step 3 — Amplitude.

From u2=ω2A2−f12/ω2u^2=\omega^2 A^2-f_1^2/\omega^2:

A2=u2ω2+f12ω4=u2ω2+f12ω4.A^2=\frac{u^2}{\omega^2}+\frac{f_1^2}{\omega^4}=\frac{u^2\omega^2+f_1^2}{\omega^4}.

Computing the numerator using ω2=(f22−f12)/(u2−v2)\omega^2=(f_2^2-f_1^2)/(u^2-v^2):

u2ω2+f12=u2(f22−f12)+f12(u2−v2)u2−v2=u2f22−v2f12u2−v2.u^2\omega^2+f_1^2=\frac{u^2(f_2^2-f_1^2)+f_1^2(u^2-v^2)}{u^2-v^2}=\frac{u^2 f_2^2-v^2 f_1^2}{u^2-v^2}. A2=(u2f22−v2f12)(u2−v2)(f22−f12)2.A^2=\frac{(u^2 f_2^2-v^2 f_1^2)(u^2-v^2)}{(f_2^2-f_1^2)^2}.

Answer

  k=−1f1+f2.  \boxed{\;k=-\frac{1}{f_1+f_2}.\;}   A=1f22−f12(u2−v2)(u2f22−v2f12).  \boxed{\;A=\frac{1}{f_2^2-f_1^2}\sqrt{(u^2-v^2)(u^2 f_2^2-v^2 f_1^2)}.\;}
